The mechanics of photography are light and a sensor. The essence of photography is connection.
I love the connection between people that love each other, love what they do or love where they are.
But even more than that, I love the connection that photography gives me to the world and to the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people.
Recently some friends (who happen to be among the most beautiful, genuine, intelligent and compassionate people I know) asked me to photograph their beautiful little boy having his head shaved in prep for chemo.
The joy of shooting this event (and really, just being asked to do so) was everywhere.
Seeing a really brave young man surrounded by a bunch of his school mates who put up their hands to have their heads shaved in solidarity was extraordinary. The support, laughter and love on the day was a great show of family and community and was everything that is good about people during hard times. It also epitomised everything that I love about being a photographer.
